When Do You Need a Colonoscopy?
A colonoscopy is the definitive test for the large intestine (colon and rectum). It can both diagnose conditions and treat them in the same sitting — removing polyps before they become cancerous, stopping bleeding, or taking biopsies from suspicious areas. You may need a colonoscopy if you have:
- Rectal bleeding or blood in stools — fresh red blood or dark tarry stools both need investigation
- Change in bowel habits lasting more than 3 weeks — persistent diarrhoea, constipation, or thinner stools
- Unexplained abdominal pain — particularly in the lower abdomen or cramps that come and go
- Iron-deficiency anaemia with no identified cause — GI bleeding is a common culprit
- Family history of colon cancer or polyps — earlier and more frequent screening is recommended
- Age 45+ with no prior screening — colorectal cancer is highly treatable when caught early; colonoscopy is the gold standard screen
- Known inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's, ulcerative colitis) — regular colonoscopy monitors disease activity and cancer risk
- Follow-up after prior polyp removal — most polyps are benign but recurrence surveillance is essential

Colonoscopy Preparation — Step by Step
2 Days Before
Switch to a low-fibre diet — white rice, bread, eggs, clear soups. Avoid red meat, raw vegetables, seeds, nuts.
Day Before (Evening)
Take the prescribed bowel prep solution (e.g., Colopeg / Kleanprep). Drink the full 2–4 litres over 2–4 hours. Stay near a toilet.
Morning of Procedure
Nothing to eat or drink for 4–6 hours before the procedure. Take your regular medications with a small sip of water unless told otherwise.

Arrive 30 minutes early. IV line placed. Sedation given. Procedure: 20–45 minutes. Recovery: 30–60 minutes. Results discussed before discharge.
